Abe Orbuch was born in a small town in Poland near the Russian border. He fled Poland at 21 to avoid conscription into the Russian military, settling in St. Paul. He bought a Model-T Ford and traveled to small towns outside of St. Paul where he sold fruit. He formed friendships with many in the Polish community in Foley and commuted to a poultry business he owned there for over forty years. He bought chickens, eggs and veal from Foley farmers and sold them sugar, flour and twine.

Soldier writing a letter, Messines, Belgium, 1917. A young soldier reclines on the ground. He is writing on a small piece of paper, possibly a letter home. He is using a block of wood as a makeshift writing desk. Behind him we can see a wall of sandbags and chicken wire. His helmet is lying on the ground in front of him.

Scenes such as this were commonly used as propaganda, intended to boost morale amongst the troops and provide reassurance to those at home. The Battle of Messines Ridge was won by the British, and was commanded by General Plumer, who was later named Field Marshal Lord Plumer of Messines.

Cooking his dinner

Cooking his dinner

Image by National Library of Scotland
A soldier has made himself comfortable on an old seat and is cooking on a very small open fire. Experienced soldiers were good at scrounging small luxuries, such as a few eggs or an odd chicken, to supplement the army rations. They needed to be very careful to keep fires small so the smoke would not attract enemy attention.

In theory, the army rations were very good and probably more varied than many of the men would have enjoyed in civilian life. However, the size of the army and transport difficulties meant that the soldiers often failed to get their full ration.

[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. "Cooking his dinner". It is surprising how Tommy manages to turn out decent dishes considering the difficulties he has to cook under.']
